Broadwater Hotel and Natatorium

Colonel Charles Broadwater envisioned a grand hot springs resort west of Helena to rival all others the world over. The hotel and natatorium, the largest and most elegant hot springs "plunge" in the world, opened in 1889. But Helena's population was too small too sustain such a grand venture, and the hotel was never profitable. The natatorium was irreparably damaged in the 1935 earthquakes, and the hotel was demolished in 1976. There are pieces and parts of it, however, in many places around Helena. Some of the landscaping and a part of the billiard hall remain on the property along Highway 12, just west of the Williams Street Bridge.
