Canyon Ferry Dam

The first Canyon Ferry Dam, built by private investors, began supplying electricity to Helena in September 1898. The second dam, begun in 1949, towered over the old one. In 1953 when the spillway gates shut, the reservoir filled with fifty times more water than the original lake and eventually flooded 25 miles of river bottom, covering 4,000 acres of farmland and the town of Canton. Canyon Ferry Lake is 28 miles east of Helena.
