Cathedral of St. Helena and Cathedral School

The lofty twin spires of the Cathedral of St. Helena are visible throughout the community. Located at 511 N. Warren, the structure was built at a cost of $645,590. A gift from mining magnate Thomas Cruse covered a third of this total. Albert O. Von Herbulis, an architect who specialized in Catholic instiutional architecture, designed the church and the school, which sat on the corner of 11th Avenue and Warren. The school opened in 1909 and closed in 1969. It is currently being demolished. Officials broke ground for the cathedral in 1908, the first services were held in 1914, and the interior ornamentation and stained glass windows, crafted in Germany, were completed in 1924.
