Chinese Gardens/Chinese District

 


 

Remnants of the Chinese influence in Helena include the Yee Wau Cabin (Photo) at Reeder's Alley and China Row, outside Forestvale Cemetery. Helena's Chinese Gardens can be found only on historic Sanborn maps. Students should know that "Chinese Tunnels" are a myth across the West. Mining tunnels exist beneath nearly all of Helena's neighborhoods, and Chinese residents may have worked in some of them, but so did many others. There is nothing to identify any tunnel specifically as Chinese in Helena, in Montana, or anywhere else.
