Bozeman was incorporated April 9, 1883 by the authority of the State Legislature. The city began under the mayor-council system and switched to the manager-commission system in 1922 in order to effect more control on the city's purse strings. Beginning in Jan. 1922, the office of Mayor has gone to the commissioner elected with the most votes. Since then, a City Manager has been appointed by the commission to run the day-to-day operations of the city. The list that follows is from Cortlandt L. Freeman, "The Growing Up Years: The First 100 Years of Bozeman as an Incorporated City, from 1883-1983," Bozeman: Gallatin County Historical Society, 1988.

Butte was incorporated as a city in 1878 while Montana was still only a territory. The citizens of Butte elected their first mayor in 1879 to a brief one-year term in office. Butte held annual city elections until 1893 when the term of the mayor was lengthened to two years. Below is a list compiled from an on-going series of articles written by John Astle highlighting the history of Butte's mayors from 1879-1977. His articles appear each week in The Butte Weekly newspaper throughout 2007 and are being collected in a vertical file entitled "Butte (Mont.) -- Mayors" available at the Montana Historical Society Research Center in Helena. A variety of biographical material on these Butte political figures may also be available at the MHS Research Center and at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives.
