Jeanette Rankin
Jeanette Rankin, one of Montana's most famous daughters, was born in 1880 on the family ranch near Missoula. After attending Montana State University, the New York School of Philanthropy, and the University of Washington, she became active in the women's suffrage movement. She was the first woman to address the Montana Legislative Assembly. In 1916 she became the first woman elected to the U. S. Congress. She served a second term in the U. S. House, beginning in 1940. She is famous for casting the only "No" vote on December 8, 1941, during the special session to declare war on Japan. Jeannette Rankin continued to support and promote pacifism the remainder of her life. She died in 1973.
