Mary Ronan

Mary C. Ronan was born Mary C. Sheehan in Kentucky in 1852. Before she was 12, Mary had traveled with her parents in a covered wagon to many western destinations, including Bannack and Alder Gulch, Montana. It is a popular belief that she was the first "white" girl in Alder Gulch. In 1873, she married Major Peter Ronan, who was an early Montana pioneer, newspaper editor, and Indian Agent. She died in Missoula in 1940.
