Thomas Francis Meagher

Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-1867) was an Irish patriot who was charged with sedition, exiled, and later escaped from Tasmania. After fleeing to the United States, he served in the Union army during the Civil War as a general. In 1895 he was appointed secretary and acting governor of the Montana Territory. His term was burdened with the Bozeman Trail Indian attacks in 1867, political clashes created by the Civil War, and ongoing debates concerning statehood. His disappearance in 1867 from a boat docked in Fort Benton has been the subject of controversy.
